Introducing Khimera, a browser-based creative suite for photography, design, video, and motion.
Thanks for stopping by and checking out our blog. Since this is our first post, we have some explaining to do.
Like many creatives, we’ve grown frustrated with software companies that seem more committed to profit than to artistic expression. That’s why we decided to build Khimera.
Khimera is a browser-based creative suite, with a core engine being written in Rust and compiled to WebAssembly (WASM). It’s designed to use the hardware on your own computer, with future plans for a dedicated desktop application that can take that further.
Our intent is to make the majority of core features and functionality free for anyone to use. Files and storage will be local-first, so you won’t need to upload your work just to edit it. Paid plans will offer additional collaboration tools, cloud storage, and render credits.
The suite will consist of three applications: Loupe for photo editing and organization, Etch for 2D raster and vector graphics, and Splice for video editing, motion graphics, visual effects, and animation. Together, they’re intended to cover many of the workflows people rely on desktop creative suites for. We’re building them together so that moving between photography, design, and motion feels like continuing the same project rather than starting another one.
Alongside the editors, we plan to launch with extensive team and review features for small creative teams, studios, and agencies. Shared projects, feedback, and revisions will be part of the same workflow, helping collaborators and clients stay involved without having to manage the review process somewhere else.
We’re currently aiming for a closed alpha toward the end of 2026. We’ll keep you updated here with more news as development progresses and we get closer to opening it up.
We’re looking forward to bringing you along on the journey.
